Claim 01


Circulating taurine declines with age in humans

The 2023 Science paper reported taurine concentrations declining with age in mice, monkeys and humans. That single observation is what made taurine a longevity supplement.

In June 2025 the same journal published an NIH study asking whether the decline is real. Using longitudinal data — repeated measurements in the same individuals — across humans, rhesus monkeys and mice, it found circulating taurine increased or remained unchanged with age in three geographically distinct human cohorts: the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (ages 26–100), the Balearic Islands Study of Aging (20–85) and the Predictive Medicine Research cohort in Atlanta (20–68).

It also found that differences between any two individuals typically exceeded the change attributable to ageing. The authors concluded taurine is unlikely to serve as a good biomarker for ageing.

The 2023 study was substantial work. Restoring taurine levels increased lifespan in mice and in C. elegans, and improved healthspan markers in monkeys. Supplementation slowed DNA damage, telomerase deficiency, impaired mitochondrial function and cellular senescence.

The authors were careful about the limits of it. Their own conclusion states that to test whether taurine deficiency drives ageing in humans, long-term, well-controlled supplementation trials measuring healthspan and lifespan as outcomes are required. Those trials have not been run.

Nothing here has been retracted or discredited. The animal biology stands. What changed is the claim that it transfers.

Taurine deficiency drives human ageing

A 2025 study in Aging Cell titled “Experimental evidence against taurine deficiency as a driver of aging in humans” found no association between circulating taurine and age, muscle mass, strength, physical performance or mitochondrial function.

The NIH work reached the same place from a different direction, finding taurine inconsistently associated with health outcomes across ages, species and cohorts, and the relationship with muscle strength and body weight unreliable. Their stated position is that the efficacy of supplementation to delay ageing may be context-dependent, and that there is no solid clinical data showing supplements help humans live longer.

Evidence against·No correlation with any functional test

The 2025 human study measured serum taurine against the six-minute walk test, the Timed Up and Go test and the 30-second sit-to-stand test — standard measures of functional capacity. No correlation was found with any of them.

Nor did it differ between physically active and inactive participants: 92.40 ± 27.04 µM versus 96.93 ± 25.16 µM, p=0.338. Those values sit within the range the original 2023 paper reported for humans, so this is not a measurement discrepancy.

Taurine and its metabolites do rise in response to exercise. That is a real finding, and it is a different claim from taurine level indicating how fit or how old you are.
